In ecommerce retouching, studio and lifestyle imagery can serve very different, but equally as important, purposes.
A clean studio setup helps to give customers an uninterrupted, detailed view of a product - offering both dramatic, eye-catching angles as well as important detail shots to highlight product specifics. The focus is often entirely on accuracy: colour consistency, texture, shape, finish etc. Every line and reflection is refined to present the product at its best - crisp, balanced, and distraction-free.

Lifestyle imagery, on the other hand, tells a story. It places the product in context, showing how it fits into the customer’s world - a tent pitched under summer light, a wetsuit tested against winter waves, or a child’s toy brought to life through play. These scenes evoke emotion, atmosphere, and identity, and therefore aid in creating a stronger relationship between product & customer.
Shaping Mood and Tone for Brand Storytelling
Retouching for lifestyle imagery generally requires a more pre-planned approach, as the overall mood the lifestyles need to convey will need to be established beforehand. Lighting and tone must support the story the brand wants to tell, and it's up to the retoucher to help bring this to life, as well as getting used to editing in different styles as product requirements will vary. For instance, a wetsuit brand might favour cooler, moody tones to convey performance and endurance, while a children’s brand will lean into warmth and vibrancy to reflect energy, happiness & fun.
Ensuring Visual Consistency Without Losing Authenticity
A tricky area for the retoucher will often present itself here: ensuring the studio images of the product match the lifestyles, in terms of colour accuracy and lighting as examples. For instance, it can be expected that a product within a lifestyle setting will have a certain amount of colour cast from the surroundings, which wouldn't be present in the studio. It's vital to keep consistency in a product listing to not confuse the customer. Having said that, we have to ensure that it looks real in the scene; if we remove too much colour cast/reflection, it can end up looking photoshopped in, which should be avoided.

The goal is to stay faithful to the product while enhancing the visual mood that defines the brand. Whether it’s perfecting studio precision or fine-tuning lifestyle emotion, retouching plays a crucial role in connecting the image to its audience.
